Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about comparing and choosing a UK pharmacy — NHS charges, private services, online pharmacy safety, and how Pick My Pharmacy works.
Is Pick My Pharmacy free to use?▼
Yes. Comparing pharmacies and sending enquiries through Pick My Pharmacy is completely free for patients. We earn revenue from optional paid listings and pay-per-lead fees charged to pharmacies — paid placement is always labelled and never changes a rating.
Are you a pharmacy? Can you give medical advice?▼
No. Pick My Pharmacy is an independent comparison and directory service — we are not a pharmacy, we are not GPhC-registered ourselves, and we do not sell or supply medicines or give medical advice. For clinical questions speak to a pharmacist or your GP; call NHS 111 for urgent medical help, or 999 in an emergency.
How do ratings on Pick My Pharmacy work?▼
Ratings combine four transparent sub-scores: price transparency, regulation and registration (GPhC premises number and superintendent on file), patient reviews from a stated source, and register standing from our latest GPhC snapshot. No pharmacy can pay for a score, and where we have no review data we show "Not yet rated" — we never invent reviews.
Is my data safe if I send an enquiry?▼
We only share your details with the specific pharmacies you select, never sell your data, and treat any health-related information in your enquiry with extra care. See our privacy policy for full details, retention periods, and your UK GDPR rights.
How do I find a pharmacy near me?▼
Enter your postcode or town on Pick My Pharmacy to see community and online pharmacies serving your area. Filter by NHS services, private services like flu jabs or travel vaccines, and delivery options, then compare them side by side.
How do you verify pharmacies before listing them?▼
We check every pharmacy against the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) premises register and show the premises number and superintendent pharmacist when on file, with a link to pharmacyregulation.org so you can verify it yourself. Online prescribing services should also be CQC-registered. Unregistered sellers are never listed.
How do I know an online pharmacy is legitimate?▼
Check it on the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org — legitimate GB online pharmacies must display their GPhC premises registration number on their website. Be wary of any site selling prescription-only medicines without a prescription or prescriber consultation.
How much is an NHS prescription?▼
The NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item, frozen for 2026/27. Prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The charge is fixed by the NHS — it never varies by pharmacy.
Who gets free NHS prescriptions in England?▼
You pay nothing if you are 60 or over, under 16, 16–18 in full-time education, pregnant or within 12 months of giving birth (MatEx), have a listed medical condition (MedEx), receive qualifying benefits, or hold an HC2 low-income certificate. Try our free prescription checker to see if you are likely to qualify.
What is a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC)?▼
A PPC covers all your NHS prescriptions in England for a fixed price: £32.05 for 3 months or £114.50 for 12 months. It pays for itself at 4 items in 3 months, or 12 items in 12 months. A separate HRT PPC costs £19.80 and covers listed HRT medicines for a year.
What is Pharmacy First?▼
Pharmacy First is an NHS England service (since 31 January 2024) that lets pharmacists assess and treat seven common conditions — sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated UTIs in women — including supplying certain prescription-only medicines where clinically appropriate, without a GP appointment.
Do pharmacies deliver prescriptions?▼
Many do. Online (distance-selling) pharmacies deliver by default, often free, and many community pharmacies offer local delivery — sometimes free, sometimes for a small fee. Our listings show delivery options and any published delivery charges.
Are the private service prices shown exact?▼
No — prices shown are indicative "from" prices for private services such as flu jabs, travel vaccinations, and earwax removal, based on published price lists. Always confirm the current price with the pharmacy before booking. NHS services are free or carry the fixed NHS charge.
Will I get spam or cold calls if I send an enquiry?▼
No. We only pass your details to the pharmacies you explicitly select, in response to your enquiry. We do not sell your details to unrelated third parties.
Can pharmacies list themselves on Pick My Pharmacy?▼
Yes. Every GPhC-registered UK pharmacy can claim a free listing. See our For Pharmacies page for free, Standard (£129/mo), and Premium (£299/mo) tiers, plus pay-per-lead from £30 (everyday) to £75 (weight management). GPhC verification is required before a listing goes live.
