Pharmacy First

Get assessed and treated for 7 common conditions at participating pharmacies in England, without needing a GP appointment — including supply of certain prescription-only medicines when clinically appropriate.

NHS Pharmacy First launched in England on 31 January 2024, letting trained pharmacists assess and treat seven common conditions — sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women — following set clinical pathways. If appropriate, the pharmacist can supply certain prescription-only medicines, such as antibiotics, without you needing to see a GP first. The service is free on the NHS and available at the vast majority of English pharmacies. Scotland has a separate, broader NHS Pharmacy First Scotland scheme; Wales and Northern Ireland run their own equivalent common ailment services.
