How to Choose a Safe Online Pharmacy in the UK

A practical UK checklist for choosing a safe online pharmacy: GPhC register checks, consultation red flags, CQC for prescribers, delivery, and when to stay local.

By Pick My Pharmacy Editorial · Updated 9 July 2026

Start with registration, not reviews

Star ratings and testimonials cannot replace a GPhC premises check — registration is the legal baseline for a UK pharmacy.

Anyone can invent reviews. A premises number on the official register is harder to fake. Use our deeper explainer on how online pharmacies work for the regulatory background, then use this page as your decision checklist before you order.

Red flags that mean walk away

  • No GPhC premises number, or a number that does not match on the register
  • Prescription-only medicines sold with no consultation
  • Prices far below the rest of the UK market with no explanation
  • No superintendent pharmacist named
  • Pressure tactics, countdown timers, or fake scarcity for medicines
  • No way to contact a pharmacist with questions

Match the pharmacy to what you need

Online pharmacies excel at repeats, discreet private treatment services, and delivery. A local pharmacy may be better for Pharmacy First, vaccinations, emergency contraception today, or a face-to-face conversation. You can nominate an online pharmacy for NHS repeats and still use a high-street pharmacy for walk-in services.

How we help you compare

Pick My Pharmacy lists GPhC-linked pharmacies and compares private treatment-service prices where we have verified figures. We never invent firm reviews. Where a listing is a referral partner, we disclose it and use sponsored outbound links — payment affects visibility, not scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UK online pharmacies still show the EU common logo?

Not in Great Britain since Brexit. Use the GPhC register instead. Northern Ireland sellers may still display the EU logo.

Are online pharmacies safe for prescription medicines?

Yes, when they are GPhC-registered and require a proper consultation. Unregulated sellers are the risk — not the online channel itself.

Should I choose the cheapest private treatment?

Compare total service price and registration first. Extremely low POM prices are often a counterfeit warning, not a bargain.

Pick My Pharmacy is an independent comparison service, not a pharmacy. We may earn a fee when you visit a referral partner. Paid placement never changes ratings. See our methodology for how we make money.
