Compare pharmacies that dispense NHS prescriptions — nominate a pharmacy for repeat prescriptions, check delivery options, and understand charges.
Most community and online pharmacies in the UK dispense NHS prescriptions. In England, each item costs a fixed £9.90 unless you're exempt — the price never varies between pharmacies, so choose based on convenience, opening hours, delivery, and how repeat prescriptions are handled instead. Prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You can nominate one pharmacy to automatically receive your GP's electronic prescriptions, making repeat medication collection or delivery simpler. If you take several regular medicines, a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) can cut your annual cost significantly — a 3-month PPC breaks even at 4 items, a 12-month PPC at 12 items across the year.
In England each NHS item is £9.90 unless you are exempt. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not charge. No pharmacy can set a different NHS item fee.
If you pay in England and collect several items a year, a Prescription Prepayment Certificate often costs less than paying per item. A 3-month PPC typically breaks even at four items; a 12-month PPC at twelve. HRT has a separate HRT PPC.
Exemptions (age, maternity, listed conditions, some benefits) are a legal entitlement — bring evidence if the pharmacy asks. This site does not decide exemption.
Nomination tells the Electronic Prescription Service which pharmacy should receive your GP’s electronic prescriptions. You can change it; you do not have to stick with the first shop you used.
Ask the new pharmacy to set nomination, or use the NHS App where your practice supports it. Paper prescriptions can still be taken to any NHS dispenser.
Distance-selling pharmacies can be nominated so repeats arrive by post. Keep a local branch in mind for fridge lines, controlled drugs, and same-day needs.
