# Can I get the morning-after pill free?

Since 29 October 2025 the oral morning-after pill has been free on the NHS at participating pharmacies across England — almost 10,000 pharmacies offer it after a short, confidential consultation, with no GP appointment needed. Community pharmacies in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland already provided it free. Sexual health clinics and GPs also supply it free UK-wide.

## How to find free emergency contraception

Most high-street pharmacies in England now provide the oral emergency contraceptive pill free under the NHS service launched on 29 October 2025 — use the NHS website's 'find emergency contraception' service finder, or call NHS 111, to confirm a participating pharmacy near you. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, community pharmacies already supply it free. Sexual health (GUM) clinics and GP surgeries can also provide it free of charge, wherever you are in the UK.

## What the consultation involves

A pharmacist will ask some confidential questions — usually in a private consultation room — about when you had unprotected sex, your medical history, and any medicines you're taking, to check which method is suitable and safe for you. Under-16s are assessed using the standard Fraser guidelines.

## If your pharmacy doesn't take part

Not every pharmacy has signed up to the NHS service, and online pharmacies sell it privately for advance supply. Where the free NHS route isn't available on the spot, pharmacies can still sell emergency contraception privately after the same consultation, typically for £15-£30 depending on the pharmacy and product.
